Canadian Democracy Dies in Darkness

Government Penchant for Secrecy Attacks the Soul of a Democratic System

A major bombshell landed in Canada. June 3, 2024.

An unknown number of federal politicians are knowingly working with hostile countries to interfere in Canada’s democracy, according to a national security committee of parliament.

“Some (of the activities) may be illegal, but are unlikely to lead to criminal charges, owing to Canada’s failure to address the long-standing issue of protecting classified information and methods in judicial processes,” the report read.

“Regardless, all the behaviours are deeply unethical and, the committee would submit, contrary to the oaths and affirmations Parliamentarians take to conduct themselves in the best interests of Canada.”

To reiterate, members of our federal government, including elected officials, engaged in illegal and deeply unethical acts to aid hostile countries working to undermine our government. We used to call this Acts of Treason.

But we’re not allowed to know who these people are. We’re not allowed to hold them to account.

Why?

The underlying principle that democracy stands on is an informed electorate, the people, able to make considered decisions about who represents them and forms their government. But we’re not allowed to be an informed electorate. We are not allowed to use critical information to decide who governs us. That information is denied us.

Why?

To protect the guilty? That is the only logical conclusion. They don’t want the guilty punished. They don’t want to bear the shame. They want to hold on to power.

There are no good reasons. Only bad ones.

We don’t know which political party is involved. One of them, two of them, all of them? We don’t know who to hold to account. We don’t know who we can trust, over the most important issue facing a nation.

It is hard to express how beyond the pale this is. How unacceptable this is. But I’ll put it this way.

If I do not know the names of the elected Parliamentarians that aided and abetted hostile countries to undermine our system of government before the next federal election, I will refuse to cast my vote. I’m done. My government is illegitimate. The whole system is a sham. We don’t live in a functional democracy, so there is no point in participating.

That’s how unacceptable this is.

It has been a long-standing problem how secret governments are in Canada. The Access to Information Program is an open joke. Canadians are regularly and routinely denied information about the people elected to represent us. We have become numb to it. And now it looks like we are paying the ultimate price for it.

We have lost all accountability.

It is often said that Canada is not a real country. It sure as hell is not a real democracy. We’re living a lie, and I refuse to participate in maintaining it.
